Tuner

Free browser-based guitar and ukulele tuner — accurate to ±5 cents using a pYIN pitch detection algorithm. No app, no install. Works in any modern browser.

How it works

Accurate to ±5 cents
Pitch is detected using the pYIN algorithm with Viterbi state smoothing — the same technique used in professional audio software. The tuner shows green only when you've held the note within ±5 cents for at least one second.
Runs entirely in your browser
Audio processing happens in a real-time AudioWorklet thread — no server, no latency, no data sent anywhere. Works on desktop and mobile.
Two tuning modes
Snap mode locks onto guitar or ukulele strings automatically — just play and it finds the closest string. Chromatic mode detects any note across a 4-octave range (A1–C6).

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a browser-based tuner?
This tuner is accurate to ±5 cents using the pYIN algorithm with Viterbi state smoothing. That is more than precise enough for standard playing — most listeners cannot perceive differences smaller than 5–10 cents. Hardware clip-on tuners typically offer ±1 cent accuracy, but the difference is inaudible in practice.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tuner works on any modern browser on iOS or Android. Tap "Start Tuning" and grant microphone permission when prompted. For best results use a quiet environment and hold the phone close to the sound hole.
What is the difference between snap mode and chromatic mode?
Snap mode locks onto the six standard guitar strings (E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4) or the four ukulele strings (G4, C4, E4, A4). It is the easiest way to tune because you do not need to know the note name — just play and it finds the closest string. Chromatic mode detects any note across a 4-octave range (A1–C6), which is useful for alternate tunings or other instruments.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The tuner runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. There is no app to install and no data is sent to any server — audio processing happens locally on your device.
Why does the tuner not detect my note?
Make sure your browser has microphone permission for this site. Speak into your microphone or play a note — if the meter shows no movement, check your system microphone settings. Background noise can also interfere; a quieter environment gives more reliable detection.
Can I tune other instruments besides guitar and ukulele?
Yes. Switch to chromatic mode and the tuner will detect any pitched note in the A1–C6 range, which covers bass guitar, violin, mandolin, and most other common instruments.
